Artemesia Gentileschi

the other day i remembered this artist from the European renaissance period that was the only female that could compete with the likes of Da Vinci and Michelangelo, but her generation was mainly influenced by Caravaggio. after being denied access to all the art schools, because of her gender, she was raped by an associate of her father's. her rapist then promised to marry her to restore her reputation, but reneged. she and her father turned him into the authorities and prosecuted it at a time when convictions on rape were rare. he was convicted and served a year in prison. her art showed her emotions surrounding it. the violence in her paintings is strange and beautiful and raw. i think the mix of in your face violence like this mixed with a method of painting that usually displays the human body in ethereal forms, and females in delicate, nymph-like poses makes her paintings all the more fascinating.
