i keep seeing blog posts and articles about this new short film entitled 'Act Da Fool' directed by Harmony Korine (director of 'The Kids')for the fashion label Proenza Schouler. Clutch has an article as well as my favorite natural hair care sight, Black Girl Long Hair.
the problem i think many people have with the film is that it portrays black girls in the typical way we have been portrayed (i.e. negatively) and that it is directed by a white man for a fashion label whose designers are two white men who, like most high end fashion houses, feature 2 or 3 black girls a season in their ads or on their runways.

i personally liked the film. i thought it took black girls out of the context of the typical black girl teenager mold we're usually in an put an art as well as a poetic prose to it. you can read the rest of my comments on the websites comment area.

Alexander Mcqueen

while i was at work, i heard on my break that Alexander McQueen was found dead tonight. possible suicide. =(
to those of you who do not know, Alexander McQueen is a fashion behemoth; one of my personal favorites fashion designers.
up til...high school graduation, i wanted to be a fashion designer. fashion definitely is one of my loves, even now, i can spend hours looking through fashion magazines. i own between 15 and 20 spiral notebooks filled with photos i've collected from magazines i liked for the last 5 or 6 years. but, i decided not to pursue it as a career because fashion can get quite materialistic. many may (and do) disagree, but i think theres something seriously wrong with wanting (let alone BUYING) shoes and pieces of clothing that are literally thousands of dollars. and i can't have my contribution to the world be....a beautiful dress....or a badass wrap skirt....or something like that. i just can't. whatever my mark, it has to be bigger and deeper.

but the thing about fashion is that it is art. and i respect/love/need/obsess over art-regardless of its medium.

Alexander Mcqueen is the fashion designer for the goth/punky brewster/wild child/drunk/psycho/sex addict/alien/outcast in all of us. i can't even wrap my head around some of the pieces he's done. anyway....i hope he found some solace. maybe he'll come back as an elephant.

comment. don't comment. admire his work.
